One of the biggest food draws for me on a trip to Iceland was the hot dog from Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur. A small hot dog stand in Reykjavik brings out locals and tourists alike to stand in line in whatever weather Iceland is throwing your way at the moment. Rain, sleet, snow, it doesn’t matter, the hot dog at the end of the line makes it all worth it. I was way too excited when I finally located this little stand hidden behind some construction. The line wasn’t too bad and it moves quickly. When I finally got to the front, I ordered one hot dog with all the toppings—to get the authentic experience—and I was not disappointed.

The mostly lamb sausage hot dog comes in a soft bun topped with sweet mustard, brown mustard, and ketchup, and sits on top of some grilled onions, chopped raw onions, and a sweet-relish sauce. Each bite offers a nice snap from the meat, some sweetness from the mixture of sauces, and a satisfying crunch from the raw onions. I savored every bite of this local specialty and immediately wanted another. There’s one picnic table next to the stand, but with the freezing rain pouring down, it made more sense to just gobble down my delicious treat standing up and be on my way. Perfect for a mid-day snack, or even for a light meal (of course you’d need more than one), these hot dogs are pretty cheap for Iceland fair. So, if you’re going to go to Iceland, you better get a hot dog.
