In the little sleepy town of St. Petersburg, Florida, all you have to do is walk through the Historic Old Northeast neighborhood to find a charming tavern serving up great food and a variety of beers.

On a family visit to St. Petersburg, when the weather was surprisingly chillier than I had expected for Florida, I found myself wandering around trying to find a good local spot to eat lunch. I soon stumbled upon Old Northeast Tavern, which was situated on the corner of a residential block. I made my way into this inviting, cozy restaurant and took a seat.

They had a decent selection of craft beers on tap and the waiter was knowledgeable about both the beer selection and the menu. With so many good food options to choose from, I needed help making a decision. He recommended the turkey strawberry sandwich, which I ordered as a wrap. There’s a choice of Sun Chips, green salad, or spicy apple coleslaw for your side but, honestly, I can never say no to a good slaw.

I was not disappointed when the spicy slaw of apples, cabbage, and vinegar arrived scooped high into a small glass dish. The specialty wrap was filled with fresh sliced strawberries, thinly shaved turkey, mixed greens, and Brie. I went with an American Pale Ale for my beer, ordering the Hoppy Hermit Pale Ale—another great choice of the afternoon. The ale was light and refreshing, and the perfect beverage to sip on while I waited for my food to arrive.

Although I wasn’t hungry enough to try more options from the menu, the beer and cheese soup also sounded incredible, and was served in a pumpernickel bread bowl. Hopefully I’ll find myself in St. Petersburg again soon, if only to try more from the menu at this lovely tavern. I surprised how deliciously satisfying everything was. It was one of those simple meals that I just couldn’t stop thinking about after I finished. Definitely a must-try if you’re ever in St. Petersburg!
