The best meal I had in South Carolina, on a trip to Charleston, turned out to be at a restaurant off the beaten path, not one that showed up on any lists. Lost Dog Café was actually recommended by a local bartender at one of the bars on King Street in Charleston. With his advice, we immediately made plans to head there for breakfast the next morning. They don’t take reservations, but the wait isn’t so bad.
About a half hour drive from downtown Charleston, we arrived in Folly Beach, a sleepy beach town in South Carolina. The line for Lost Dog Café was out the door, but people happily waited, some with their dogs, with a coffee or latte in hand. It’s a pretty decent sized spot and has outdoor patio seating, which is perfect for those warm South Carolina days.
They serve a mean bloody Mary with an appropriate amount of vegetation on top—green olive, lemon, and banana pepper. It’s hard not to be happy when your drink arrives in a mason jar. The menu ranges from all types of delicious Southern eats and twists on some classics. I opted for the blackened salmon BLT, which included fried green tomatoes, crumbled bacon, romaine, and Cajun mayo. It was incredible. Something about a fried green tomato in your wrap just makes everything better.

But the best decision I made by far was the side order of biscuits and gravy. The biscuits are freshly made and come to the table warm and buttery and drenched in homemade sausage gravy that you just want to eat with a spoon. Incredible. So good that I decided to order a biscuit to go, and then proceeded to eat it right there, as I waited for the check to arrive. It was hard to resist that buttery goodness. If you’re ever in Charleston, take a morning trip to Folly Beach and check out Lost Dog Café. You will not be disappointed.

Yum.
Looks amazing!
